Abstract

An energetic ion which is incident on a solid target causes a momentary pressure and temperature increase in the impact cascade, i.e., a so-called spike occurs. A simple model is proposed to describe the spike processes based on the Rankine-Hugoniot equation and the Landau-Lifshitz theory of the velocity of a strong shock wave. The model assumes that the extreme processes with the spike are created in a movement of a shock wave produced by the incident ion. The model is discussed in relation to various spike effects.
