Metastatic tumors of the CNS are increasing in importance as clinicians treat primary tumors more aggressively and life expectancy of patients with metastatic disease lengthens. This text reviews the basis for changing attitudes about metastatic tumors and outlines current diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to patients with a variety of neoplasms. The book is written by three neurosurgeons and a neuropathologist (Hirano). Two of the six chapters review the pathology of metastatic tumors of the CNS, based on a study of 8,000 autopsies at the Montefiore Hospital in New York. Chapter 2, concerning the pathology of metastases affecting the CNS, is well written and beautifully illustrated. This chapter alone is worth the price of the book. Chapter 5, concerning metastases within the spinal canal, is also nicely done. Clinical experience with 616 patients, managed by various means at the University of Tokyo, is described in detail in chapters 3 and 4.
