Abstract The first experiment in which stepwise photoionization of atoms is used for analytical purposes is reported. A detection limit of 12 pg/ml has been achieved for sodium in aqueous solutions. The results are compared with atomic fluorescence measurements. The potentialities of the new method are discussed.
