The electric dipole moments of some substituted stilbenes in the ground (μ g ) and the first excited singlet state (μ e ) have been determined and discussed in regard of the donor-acceptor- interactions. A linear correlation between the Hammett σ p -constants and the values of μ g , μ e and Δμ = μ e - μ g for different substituted stilbenes was found.
