Abstract Single crystals of Nd:Sr 3 Gd 2 (BO 3 ) 4 were grown by the Czochralski technique. The polarized absorption, polarized fluorescence spectra, and fluorescence decay curve of Nd:Sr 3 Gd 2 (BO 3 ) 4 crystals were measured at the room temperature. The intensity parameters Ω λ ( λ = 2, 4, 6), spontaneous transition probabilities, the branching ratios, the radiative lifetime, and fluorescence quantum efficient were obtained by means of the Judd–Ofelt (J–O) theory. The stimulated emission cross‐sections of the important laser transitions have been calculated by the Fuchtbauer–Landenburg (F–L) method. The relation between crystal structure and optical properties is discussed. These results indicate that Nd:Sr 3 Gd 2 (BO 3 ) 4 crystal is a promising candidate for a solid‐state laser material.
