Abstract This paper examines the role of paraprofessionals in education. Paraprofessionals often represent the closest linking of language and culture between the community and the school and often take lead responsibility for teaching second language learners. Their cultural and linguistic knowledge could enrich classroom discourse. Yet their lack of professional education creates a situation where children, often with the greatest needs, are served by the adults in the classroom with the least preparation. The author suggests the creation of a professional career ladder leading to full teaching certification for the educational paraprofessional.
