Hydrostatic pressure effects on the Raman spectra of solid nitrogen at 4·2 K up to 9 kbar† 1 bar = 105 N m-2. are presented. In both α and γ-phases a splitting of the stretching mode is observed. Lattice mode intensities and frequencies of γ-N2 are calculated. Grüneisen parameters for the different Raman active modes of solid N2 are determined; they provide information on the nature of the intra and intermolecular potentials.
