Abstract A new method for the separation of fatty acids by means of the paper‐chromatography of the fatty acid anilides is described. Paper‐chromatography of the lower fatty acids as such is difficult due to the volatility of the acids in question. To get round this difficulty two ways are open: a) to make use of the salts 1 ); and b) to subject the derivatives (hydroxamic acids 2 ), acid hydrazides 3 ), or ethyl esters 4 )) to paper‐chromatography. In the literature no mention is made of the application of the acid anilides. It is true that in a recent publication by Green 5 ) the paper‐chromatography of saccharinic acid anilides is discussed, but this investigator has not exploited the possibilities of the anilides.
