By the reduction of iron and removal of sulfur, the previously inaccessible [Fe8S6]4+ clusters (as cluster anion [Fe8S6I8]4− (1)) were synthesized from [Fe4S4]2+. This type of cluster, which contains exclusively FeII centers, is not only of interest as a molecular model for reactions of FeS, but may also undergo further reaction on account of the lack of ligands and the oxidation state of the metal.
