An improved SIRT-style reconstruction algorithm has been suggested using a beam concept for linear first-order microwave tomographic imaging. The results of applying the algorithm on a small-scale model having a simplified data-collecting arrangement have been extremely encouraging and indicate the possibility for achieving a high-resolution microwave imaging system. However, the contrast in the picture that is obtained is a bit poor mainly due to the simplifying assumptions made to linearize the algorithm and to some extent due to some other reasons, e. g., 1) insufficient number of projections, 2) improper selection of initial trial solution, 3) small object size, and 4) failure of the fan-beam concept in electromagnetic imaging.
