A simple model was developed to estimate the transtracheal pressure exerted by cuffed endotracheal tubes. In-vitro experiments on excised human trachea indicate that cuffs constructed of silicone exert lower transtracheal pressures than cuffs constructed of polyvinyl chloride or latex.
