SULPHATION TECHNIQUES IN HISTOCHEMISTRY WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO METACHROMASIA

Abstract

1. Methods are described for the sulphation of tissue carbohydrates in histological sections. 2. Evidence is produced to show that the various procedures described result in the formation of sulphuric acid esters of the carbohydrates. 3. The histochemical applications of the metachromatic staining reaction can be greatly extended by the use of these techniques, as neutral polysaccharides, non-sulphated acid mucopolysaccharides, and glycoproteins, which are ordinarily orthochromatic, are rendered metachromatic.
