Synopsis A study of above‐ and below‐ground associational effects of alfalfa and orchardgrass was facilitated by partitioning the root systems of certain treatment combinations. Apparently alfalfa was benefited in an indirect manner in that orchardgrass offered less competition, under the conditions of this experiment, for the various growth factors.
