The first examples of an expectedly large class of rare earth carbide halides are the new compounds Gd4Br3C2B, La3Br2C2B, and Ce6Br3C3B2. Their structures contain low-dimensional fragments of the three-dimensional network of metal boride carbides; typical building units are discrete C atoms, and BC, CBBC, and CBC groups. The projection of the structure of Gd4Br3C2B along [010] is shown on the right. • = B, ○ = C, ○ = Gd.
