The relation of the complex well which is used to describe average features of the scattering to dispersion theory is discussed. A model is employed in which the compound states have an underlying single-particle structure. It is shown that a complex well can be defined which reproduces the average scattering phase. The imaginary part of this well is simply related to the absorption.
