MCD of the Eu3+ ion in aqueous solution. Analysis of the 5<i>D</i>0,1,2←7<i>F</i>0,1,2 transitions

An electric or magnetic dipole character is assigned to the transitions in the visible region of the Eu3+ absorption spectrum. The theoretical calculation of the sign properties of the corresponding Faraday parameters is supported by the experimental MCD of the aqueous solution. It is shown that the magnetic circular dichroism of all the considered transitions points to a D3h symmetry of the hydrated Eu3+ ion.
