Larvae of the oyster ( Ostrea edulis L.), when released, can live for several days without food, and can grow to full size when subsequently fed. Energy is supplied by protein, carbohydrate and lipid of the larval body, all of which decrease during starvation. The measured decreases are sufficient to account for the energy expended as indicated by oxygen consumption.
