Abstract Various techniques have been used for organizing molecules at interfaces to form monolayers. With these components of designed monolayer assemblies complex systems of cooperating molecules have been constructed and it is shown that the planned functions of the artificial units depend strongly on the spatial and energetic coordination of the constituent molecules.
