Abstract

Epidermoid cyst of the cecum is rare. These sequestration cysts may be congenital or acquired. The congenital epidermoid cysts relate to inclusion of ectodermal elements at time of closure of the neural groove or when epithelial surfaces coalesce. Acquired epidermoid cysts are traumatic or iatrogenic in origin and are due to implantation of epidermis in locations favorable to growth. Since in both reported cases of epidermoid cyst of the cecum the patients had had an appendectomy at which time no cyst was found, implantation may have occurred at that time.
