Strong Velocity Compression of a Supersonic Atomic Beam Using Moving Optical Molasses

We report the generation of a highly monochromatic beam of metastable argon atoms. The longitudinal velocity distribution of a supersonic atomic beam is compressed using optical molasses in the moving frame of the atoms. Velocity ratios υ0/Δυ in excess of 800 have been obtained.
