Oxides and oxide hydroxides of iron are important not only for their biological and mineralogical ubiquity, but also for the impact that they have on industry. The use of SAMs of ω-substituted alkylthiols (notably of sulfonates) on gold(111) surfaces for the room-temperature nucleation of monolayers of lepidocrocite (γ-FeO(OH); see diagram) from solution is presented.
