The electronic absorption spectrum of the benzene negative ion has been measured. It is found that the intensity distribution of the bands in this spectrum is not in agreement with calculations based on the ASMO treatment of Pariser and Parr. In an effort to resolve this difficulty the calculations have been extended to include the effects of Jahn—Teller distortion and electron correlation in the ground state.
