Abstract

The present paper undertakes the study of (C6H9N2)2HgCl4, which is a new hybrid compound. It is synthesized and characterized by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Thermal analysis, IR, Raman and impedance spectroscopy. The non-centrosymmetric compound is crystallized in the monoclinic system with space group P21 and the following unit cell parameters: a = 8.907(1) Å, b = 15.458(9) Å, c = 14.019(8) Å, β = 102.3(1)° and Z = 4. The structure can be described by the alternation of two different, cationic–anionic layers parallel to (1 1 0) plan. The cohesion of compound entities is ensured by hydrogen bonding (N–H⋯Cl) and π–π interactions. The differential scanning calorimetry reveals three peaks. Impedance spectroscopy study reveals that the polaron model or the classical hopping model is the most probable conduction mechanism. As for the temperature and frequency dependence of dielectric constants, it has been investigated to determine some parameters related to conductivity.
