Stark broadening of the He i 4471-A<i></i>line and its forbidden component in dense cool plasma

Abstract

We have measured the profile of the He i 4471-A\r{} line and its forbidden component at 4470 A\r{} in the plasma of a high-pressure pulsed discharge at an electron temperature of about 1.5 eV, and at electron densities ranging from 0.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{17}$ to 2.0\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{17}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}3}$. Contrary to all preceding experiments performed at higher electron temperatures, in the present experiment better agreement with theoretical calculations is found. A tentative explanation of this improved agreement is offered.
