31 P Fourier transform nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used to characterise phosphorus-containing additives used in lubricants. Quantitative and qualitative data can be obtained with the use of new and used oils that have been subjected to standard Cortina and Petter W1 engine tests. The chemistry of additive degradation during engine testing is discussed in connection with recent theories of the mechanism of engine protection.
