Summary A group of 117 patients with secondary postpartum haemorrhage was examined by ultrasonic compound B scanning for retained products of conception. False positive diagnoses were made in 17 per cent of this group of patients and retained products of conception were overlooked in 1 ‐7 per cent. Using this technique, 74 per cent of patients could be spared unnecessary curettage. It is therefore concluded that ultrasonic scanning is valuable in determining the management of secondary postpartum haemorrhage.
