Nanowire arrays of amorphous carbon-coated single-crystal SnO2 with a mean diameter of approximately 80 nm were synthesized by annealing the anodic alumina membrane filled with SnO2 sol. HRTEM and SAED revealed the crystallography of the single crystal and the in situ formed amorphous carbon tubes. When they were used as anodes in lithium ion batteries, the cycling performance was greatly improved.
