We report new high resolution photoabsorption spectra of cadmium covering the 4d-subshell excitation spectral region using synchrotron radiation as the background source of continuum. The spectra were recorded in the first order of a 3 m spectrograph equipped with a 5000 lines/mm holographic grating. Long Rydberg series are observed converging to two conspicuous limits built on the 4d95s2 parent ion configuration. The series are identified as 4d105s2 1 S0 to 4d95s2(2D52/,2D32/)np and nf. The jK-level structure of the 4d95s24f and 4d95s25f configurations are reported for the first time. The new high resolution data reveal examples of interchannel interactions and autoionization effects which are interpreted by means of the multichannel quantum defect theory.
