Abstract

L-Amino acid oxidases have been isolated from various sources including microorganisms,1 ~4) snake venom5) and rat kidney.6) L-Glutamate is a poor substrate for almost all of the known oxidases. L-Glutamate oxidase activity was observed in a membranefragment preparation from Azotobacter vinelandii by Jurtshuk and McManus.7) The crude enzyme also catalyzed the oxidation of several damino acids, and was shownnot to be a type of L-amino acid oxidase since hydrogen peroxide was not detected in the reaction. Recently, an L-amino acid oxidase which prefers lglutamate to other L-amino acids as a substrate has been found in the culture broth of Streptomyces violascens.8) The enzyme exhibited a measurable activity on L-glutamine and L-histidine.
