Abstract

Under conditions restrictive for growth, such as high cell density or serum deprivation, human diploid cells (Wiebel and Baserga 1969; Westermark 1971) and a number of established rodent cell lines (Todaro et al. 1965; Nilhausen and Green 1965; Holley and Kiernan 1968; Bürk 1970) enter a stationary phase in which most of the cells have a DNA content equivalent to that of cells in the G1 phase of the cell cycle (Wiebel and Baserga 1969; Bartholomew et al. 1976). When these resting cells, called G0 cells by some investigators (Epifanova and Terskikh 1969; Sander and Pardee 1972; Baserga et al. 1973; Smets 1973), are stimulated to proliferate, they enter DNA synthesis after a lag period that varies from 10 hours to more than 40 hours. The entrance into S is then followed by a wave of mitosis. Under similar conditions restrictive for growth, virally transformed mammalian cells do not enter...
