Two aspects of the application of fringe anemometers to particle sizing are discussed. It is shown that the test space should be defined in terms of fringe contrast, and the effects of particle position in the test space are explored. The conditions under which the approximate results of diffraction theory are valid are examined, and the requirements are found to be large particles and large detector apertures in the forward direction.
