Experiment and simulation of the population distribution over the rotational levels of OH (A 2 Σ, v '=0) in an atmospheric pressure flame, following laser excitation of one of these rotational levels, are described. The measured distribution can be quantitatively understood on the basis of the energy-transfer rates reported previously. A method for determining flame temperatures from the laser-induced fluorescence spectra is discussed.
