This short article reports the chemical degradations necessary to elucidate the structure of prostaglandins E F1 and F2. It is pointed out that most identifications of these compounds have been nonclassical i.e. by mass spectrometry of fractions isolated by gas chromatography and comparison of the masspectrograms with synthetic compounds. The 5-step degradation is pictured stereochemically and the procedures are outlined stepwise.
