Facile synthesis of biocompatible materials from α- or β-cyclodextrin and their polymers can be achieved via a kinetically controlled acetalation. These materials can hydrolyze into the corresponding precursors, with a fast or slow process dependent on pH. Since cyclodextrins can function as the building units to synthesize polymers with great structural diversity, the methodology developed herein may be a facile but powerful approach to create a materials library with wide biomedical applications.
