Monodisperse Fe3O4 nanoparticles are synthesized by a much simplified method of reductive decomposition of iron acetylacetonate in benzyl ether and oleylamine. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles are catalytically active for CVD growth of 1D boron nanowires.
