Star-shaped stilbenoid zinc phthalocyanines with π-conjugated oligo(p-phenylenevinylene)s (OPVs) have been prepared for fine-tuning of absorption and fluorescence bands. The direct introduction of OPV segments at β-positions of Zn phthalocyanines induced shifts in the Q-band and emission band compared to the complex lacking OPV side chains. Furthermore, these shifts strongly depended on the number and the length of OPV side chains. The stilbenoid phthalocyanine modified with flexible alkyl chains forms a discotic mesophase in the bulk. The structure of the mesophase was analyzed by X-ray and UV−vis measurements. This compound organized spontaneously into one-dimensional columnar assemblies by intermolecular π−π and van der Waals interactions.
