A study of 200 mongoloids at Pennhurst State School revealed that syringoma was present in 37 patients. Females were affected twice as frequently as males. Onset of the manifestation was observed at or just before puberty. In mongoloids, syringoma is limited to the regions about the eyes. Syringoma does not appear to be related to the intelligence quotient of the patient or to any particular manifestation of mongolism. The clinical findings were confirmed by numerous histologic examinations. The results of this study would warrant the addition of syringoma to the list of criteria for the diagnosis of mongolism.
