Abstract

Radio-frequency and optical spectroscopy are compared. Standard results in the theory of hyperfine structure are quoted. The excitation of atoms and the detection of radio-frequency resonances are discussed quantitatively. Experiments are described in which the techniques of `double resonance', electron impact, and atomic beams are used. A table of measurements is given.
