Abstract

Born partial wave integrals have been evaluated for all transitions induced by electron impact between the hydrogen atom states 1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p and 3d. These form the Born reactance matrix RB. Calculations have been performed for k1 = 1.0, 1.2, 1.5 and 2.0, 13.6 k12 eV being the energy associated with the 1s state, and cross sections determined from the transmission matrix T obtained in the conventional first Born approximation, TI = -2i RB, and also in the Born approximation II, TII = -2i RB/(1 -iRB), which takes some account of couplings between the various states considered. Introducing couplings to the n = 3 states in the approximation II calculations has altered only to a small extent the cross sections involving the states 1s, 2s and 2p only, compared with results obtained by Burke and Seaton.
