The behaviour of phaseless object reconstruction algorithms is investigated by examining the results obtained from one of them (Fienup's algorithm) when it is used to analyse data deliberately designed such that no unique reconstruction is possible. The results are surprising but may, from one point of view, be regarded as encouraging.
