Abstract The existence of a layer structure and of a permanent internal electric field are peculiarities of SSFLC-displays which are unknown for nematic devices. These features give rise to both merits and problems. In order to be able to overcome the problems we present a quantitative investigation which relates physical characteristics of FLC-material, devices and electrical addressing to properties resulting from tilted layer structure and internal field.
