A whole-body counter is discussed that combines shadow shielding with (integral or differential) scanning, weighs only 5 tons, has a background as low as an iron-room counter, has little variation in sensitivity for different size people and has only slightly less sensitivity than an iron-room counter. The light weight of the counter was exploited by placing one in a truck for use in a radiation protection program and by transporting it by air for use in a study of radioactivity in Alaskan Eskimos.
