Abstract

Infrared spectra of the anthraxylon constituent of bituminous coal are compared with the spectra of cellulose char and sugar char. The similarity of the spectra indicates the presence of definite molecular configurations in the chars and lends valuable support to the theory that cellulose is an important precursor of coal.
