Theory for calculating approximate values for the propagation constants of an optical rib waveguide by weighting the refractive indices

Abstract

The effective-index method is an approximate way of calculating the propagation constants of a rib waveguide. It is shown that the range of application and the uniformity of approximation can be enhanced by weighting the indices appropriately. The theory is presented and the results compared with accurately known values.
