Measurements of the emission and absorption of CdS single crystals have been made at several temperatures. At 4\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}K a set of emission lines in the range 4850-5020 A has been found. A study of these lines together with observations at other temperatures suggests that they are emitted by a system consisting of the combination of a gas and CdS, the gas being adsorbed on the crystal.
