Abstract

The radiative lifetimes for five Fe I and three Fe ii upper states which result in transitions terminating in the ground state were obtained with our electron-beam phase-shift apparatus. We found lifetimes ranging from 8.4 to 2.6 ns for the various transitions. These are converted to absolute oscillator strengths by using relative transitim probabilities taken from the literature The resulting oscillator strengths are applied to problems of the solar iron abundance and the column densities of iron observed in the spectrum of PliL 938.
