Abstract

The de Haas--van Alphen effect has been used to study the Zeeman splitting of the Landau levels for the closed \ensuremath{\Gamma} sheet and the \ensuremath{\alpha} orbit on the open hole sheet in platinum. From the spin-splitting zeros of both the fundamental and second harmonic together with the variation of the amplitude, the anisotropy of the Zeeman splitting has been mapped out in the symmetry planes. The change of integer between spin-splitting-zero contours has been established through studies of an iron-diluted platinum crystal. The area around [110] has been investigated in great detail for the \ensuremath{\Gamma} sheet, revealing a large anisotropy in the Zeeman splitting. In contrast to the anisotropy of the \ensuremath{\Gamma} sheet the ${g}_{c}$ factor of the \ensuremath{\alpha} orbit appears to be almost isotropic. The anisotropy of the cyclotron-orbit ${g}_{c}$ factor is discussed in view of band-structure properties and compared with earlier presented results on palladium.
