The gene expressions of the major histocompatibility complex in pigs were examined by mixed lymphocyte reactions (MLR) and by conventional serological techniques. When the results were compared, fewer alternative phenotypes were shown by MLR than by serology. Thus, MLR polymorphism was considered to be restricted in the context of the polymorphism of the complex as a whole. Since the gene expressions detected by both techniques appeared relevant to renal allograft rejection, typing by both should give more accurate predictions of survival. It remains to be seen whether a similar phenomenon can be demonstrated in other outbred species, including man.
