Abstract Polymerizations of acetylene with nonpolymerizing gases and vapors such as H 2 O, N 2 , and CO in a plasma generated by inductive coupling of 13.5 MHz radio frequency are investigated. It is found that acetylene copolymerizes with those comonomers and that properties of copolymers are distinctly different from that of plasma polymer of acetylene. The copolymerization with H 2 O has a significant effect in reducing the trapped free radicals in the plasma polymer (to a nonexistent level). Infrared and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopies and elemental analysis of polymers are used to investigate the incorporation of H 2 O, N 2 , and CO into the plasma polymers.
