An acyclonucleoside structure (Z) has been developed which possesses three hydroxymethyl groups attached to the carbon which is analogous to the 4′-carbon of natural nucleosides. The presence of the third hydroxymethyl group significantly reduces activity against herpesviruses as compared to the dihydroxymethyl (BIOLF-62) and monohydroxymethyl (acyclovir) models.
